Halifax Regional Police Constable Jason Mitchell, who has been with Halifax Regional Police for 5 ½ years and serves as a Patrol Officer in East Division, last evening received the Award of Appreciation for Outstanding Service from HomeBridge Youth Society.

Linda Wilson, Homebridge Executive Director, presented the award and had many kind things to say about Cst. Mitchell and why he was the logical choice for this year’s award. “Cst. Mitchell is known for putting an extra effort into understanding and getting to know the youth. He calls and drops in without being asked, to see how things are going in the facilities. He has connected with many employees and youth and they all like, respect and know they can depend on him.”

When one HomeBridge employee heard Cst. Mitchell would be honored, she sent an email to Ms. Wilson, stating: “He is not only fair, but he is a strong advocate for the youth in care and the youth care teams. You can see all over his face the passion and real sense of caring he has for our youth. It’s refreshing and spirit-lifting!” Another HomeBridge employee shared a story of an evening where Cst. Mitchell took his supper break with the employees and youth and joined them at Subway for sandwiches and conversation.

After learning that he would be receiving the award, Cst. Mitchell dropped by Ms. Wilson’s office, and introduced himself. He wanted her to know, that it is the Youth Care Workers who deserve awards, not him. “The Youth Care Workers are organized, helpful, skilled with the kids, and make my job easy. I'll accept the award, but I want to make sure you know that it's the Youth Care Workers who deserve awards,” said Cst. Mitchell.

“The value Cst. Mitchell places on forging strong relationships with our community partners and our youth is evident. He goes above and beyond the call of duty to help young people overcome significant challenges. We are very proud of his work and commend him on winning this important award,” says Deputy Chief Bill Moore, who was present for the award presentation last evening and also sits on the Board of Directors for HomeBridge Youth Society.
