Thursday, April 21, 2016 (Halifax, NS) - The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents to attend an open house next week regarding plans to improve and extend the existing South Park Street bicycle lanes.
Marked bicycle lanes currently exist in both directions on South Park Street, between Sackville Street and Morris Street/University Avenue, in Halifax. On-street improvements being considered for this section of the bicycle lane include options to reduce conflicts between motor vehicles and bicycles through:
• new painted buffers or consideration of protected bicycle lanes (if feasible)
• more durable pavement marking applications;
• changes to turning lanes at intersections; and
• extension of the bicycle lane markings through to each intersection.
Secondly, plans are also being developed to determine the feasibility of extending the existing South Park Street bicycle lane from Morris Street/University Avenue, through to Inglis Street. Changes to existing on-street parking would be required along the section of South Park Street between South Street and Inglis Street to enable the bicycle lane installation.
Residents are invited to attend the open house event to learn more about this project and provide feedback, as follows:
When: Monday, April 25, 7 - 8:30 p.m. (a brief presentation will take place at 7:30 p.m.)
Where: Halifax Central Library, Lindsay Children’s Room, 5440 Spring Garden Road, Halifax
The South Park Street bicycle lane project is still in the planning phase and any recommended changes would have to be approved by Regional Council prior to implementation. The South Park Street bicycle lane extension is one of a number of bicycle infrastructure related improvements identified in the 2014 Active Transportation Priorities Plan.
