Saturday, March 21, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that sections of Oxford Street and North Street in Halifax will be closed today while crews continue with snow removal.

Oxford between Chebucto Road and South Street, and North between Brunswick Street and Chebucto Road, will close starting at 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. while crews work with heavy equipment to blow and load the snow into trucks to haul it away. Halifax Regional Police will be on hand to provide traffic control for the duration of the closures.

Halifax Transit buses that normally travel on these streets will be operating on detoured routes until the streets reopen tonight. Information on service disruptions and detoured routes is available on transit’s website at www.halifax.ca/transit and via @hfxtransit on Twitter.

Motorists are advised to find alternative routes if travelling in those areas today and are reminded to keep an eye out for plows, excavators, salt trucks and other heavy equipment on the streets and sidewalks as the cleanup continues around the region. Crews will also be out today clearing catch basins in advance of the rain forecast to start this evening.

Residents are reminded that until further notice, the municipality is fully enforcing Section 139 of the provincial Motor Vehicle Act, which prevents on-street parking any time, day or night, when snow clearing is underway. Officers are continuing to work with clearing crews and doing proactive patrols to help prevent people from parking on the street. Officers will ticket and tow any vehicles that are already on the streets hampering snow removal.

The municipality understands that these parking restrictions and road closures may cause some inconvenience; however, this work is required to remove snow and widen the streets to ensure emergency and transit vehicles can navigate the roads safely. We thank you for your continued cooperation and patience.
