During the month of September, there were 22 vehicle/pedestrian collisions in Halifax. Eighteen took place in Halifax Regional Police jurisdiction and four occurred in Halifax District RCMP jurisdiction. Year over year, this represents an increase in both areas, with 12 incidents reported to Halifax Regional Police in September, 2013, and three in RCMP areas.

In both 2013 and 2014, the majority of vehicle/pedestrian collisions reported from January to September occurred in crosswalks (60% and 64%, respectively).  Of the 167 pedestrians involved, 52 reported no injury, 88 experienced minor injuries, 18 experienced moderate injuries, six had serious injuries and there were three fatalities.

Police remind motorists and pedestrians that road safety is a shared responsibility. Motorists are reminded to pay attention to the road and drive defensively. Be particularly mindful at crosswalks and keep a watchful eye for pedestrians. Pedestrians are reminded to make eye contact with drivers and wait until vehicles come to a complete stop before attempting to cross the road at marked and unmarked crosswalks.
