Halifax Regional Police were called to the "off leash" parking lot of Shubie Park in Dartmouth by a concerned citizen on July 3 just after 8 a.m. The area is located at 38 Locks Road in Dartmouth.

A large, live seal was found in the parking lot.

Police had sections of the area closed due to the 600-pound animal being in close proximity to trail users and their animals.

Just before 2:30 p.m., the seal, with the help of other agencies including Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency Service, EHS, Marine Animal Rescue Society, Hope for Wildlife and Department of Fisheries were able to safety sedate and load the animal onto a transport vehicle.

The seal was safety transported back to and reunited with the ocean.

The event drew significant crowds and attention. Police would like to thank everyone for their cooperation in remaining away from the animal as well as disruptions to certain areas of the park. It was required in order to safely remove the seal, ultimately resulting in his successful release back into the wild.
