Police Issue Fraud Alert for Florists

(10:30 a.m.)HRM Partners in Policing are warning citizens, particularly those who work in the floral industry about a fraud-related file they are investigating.

Police have received a complaint regarding a web based company defrauding local florists. A representative from the company has contacted at least one florist in HRM offering them an opportunity to be the local distributor for any on-line orders for this area in exchange for an annual fee. The florist has filled several orders but has not received payment from the web-based company. Anyone who has been a victim of such a scam is encouraged to report it to the HRP/RCMP Integrated Financial Crime Unit at 490-1985.

The following tips that will help prevent similar frauds.

• Always deal with reputable companies• Verify with the information including company name, address and phone number• Verify the authenticity of the company through the Better Business Bureau• Insist on a detailed quote of the work required• Ensure the receipt or work order includes the company name, address and phone number• Report suspicious activity to police

Remember, if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
