As part of our continued focus on pedestrian safety, Halifax Regional Police and Halifax District RCMP have committed to releasing vehicle/pedestrian collision reports to provide police and citizens with more contextual information on this issue. Today we are releasing the following:

Pedestrian/vehicle collisions 2012 to 2014
The number of collisions decreased by 19% from 2012 to 2013 and increased 55% from 2013 to 2014. The chart below provides a synopsis of the data from 2012 to 2014:

Key findings for the three year period:
The majority of victims (59%) did not experience an injury as a result of the collision. Victims were most commonly in the 10-30 age range (44%), with women (57%) accounting for a higher proportion than men (42%). Men accounted for 66% of drivers involved in vehicle/pedestrian collisions. Most vehicle/pedestrian collisions occurred on weekdays, most commonly between 3-8 p.m. (40%). There was an average of 22 collisions reported per month from October to March, compared to an average of 13 collisions per month from April to September. Weather conditions were clear and/or sunny at the time of most collisions (62%). Incidents in crosswalks accounted for over half of vehicle/pedestrian collisions (61%). During the month of December 2014, there were 39 vehicle/pedestrian collisions in Halifax. This represents a marked increase from the 25 incidents reported in December 2013.
Correction to previously released data
The 2013 data in the reports released today is in some cases different from the 2013 collision report released in May 2014. This resulted from a difference in what is defined as a pedestrian collision (cyclist vs scooter vs pedestrian). In some cases, collisions involving a cyclist or scooter were inadvertently categorized as pedestrian collisions. The issue has been addressed to ensure accurate reporting going forward. The 2013 numbers contained in the reports released today are valid.
