Halifax Regional Police and Halifax District RCMP are urging motorists to drive with added caution around school buses following a number of incidents in the last two days.

Yesterday and today, between 7:30 a.m. and 8 a.m., officers assigned to the Integrated Traffic Unit monitored the area of Hammonds Plains Road and Killarney Drive in Bedford and issued five summary offences tickets to motorists passing school buses exhibiting flashing red lights.

Motorists are reminded that passing school buses in either direction when the red lights are flashing, regardless of the number of traffic lanes, not only puts children in danger, but is illegal and carries substantial fines. It is also an offence to fail to proceed with caution when passing a school bus exhibiting flashing amber lights.

The Integrated Traffic Unit will be patrolling school zones during the month of September to educate motorists and enforce motor vehicle regulations. Below is a chart listing violations and applicable fines.
