Wednesday, April 13, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting residents and property owners to attend a public open house to review and provide feedback on new Construction Mitigation Guidelines.

Construction in the downtown core and other commercial areas is a welcome sign of economic development and vitality yet can also result in dust, noise, reduced parking, and mobility challenges.

Current municipal construction protocols do not adequately address these effects, which can largely be mitigated by improved hoarding, fencing and signage, options for maintaining better sidewalks, connections around construction sites, and minimizing dirt and debris on the street. Better notification can also help reduce impacts of construction activity on residents, businesses and visitors.

The municipality is hosting an open house event to provide information and seek feedback on the new Construction Mitigation Guidelines, as follows:

Date: Monday, April 18, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Location: Dalhousie University, Ralph M. Medjuck Building Exhibition Room, 5410 Spring Garden Road, Halifax

For those residents and property owners unable to attend the event in person, comments on the proposed guidelines may also be provided through the online engagement portal at http://shapeyourcityhalifax.ca/construction-mitigation.

Feedback received from both the open house event and online at Shape Your City Halifax will inform a recommendation report regarding new Construction Mitigation Guidelines to the Transportation Standing Committee in late May.

It is intended that the new guidelines would be in place in time for the upcoming summer construction season, however, the municipality is committed to making future adjustments to the new protocol as required once they’ve been implemented.
