Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Have you always wanted to learn to skate? Whether you’re a newcomer to Nova Scotia, a child just starting out or an adult who never learned, everyone is welcome to sign up for free skating lessons at the Emera Oval this winter.

The Halifax Regional Municipality has made it a priority to encourage healthy communities across the region. A big part of achieving that goal is ensuring affordable and accessible recreation programs for all residents.

The municipality is pleased to once again partner with the Canadian Tire Jumpstart program to offer free “I Love to Skate” classes to those who sign up. Registration opens at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 9, and classes will begin in January. Those interested can register online or call 902-490-6666.

These classes are designed to teach recreational ice skating in a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere at the Emera Oval. The municipality’s friendly, enthusiastic staff help create a fun environment for participants of all ages to learn how to skate.

All skaters participating in lessons must wear a helmet, regardless of age. All helmets must be CSA-approved multi-impact. Hockey helmets with a face mask offer the best protection against injury. Bicycle helmets are not permitted.

Participants may use their own approved equipment or they can borrow skates and helmets for free on site. A photo ID is required to borrow equipment.

If you plan to borrow skates or a helmet, please ensure you leave yourself enough time to collect those items before your lesson. Parents and guardians need to stay on site when children are participating in skating lessons. If you are signing up for the Family Class, a parent or guardian must participate in the child’s class and wear an approved helmet and skates at all times while on the ice.
