Thursday, Nov. 13, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Thousands are expected to attend The Chronicle Herald Holiday Parade of Lights in downtown Halifax on Saturday, Nov. 15. People are urged to plan ahead and consider public transit, as parking may be limited and traffic will be heavy.
The parade begins at 6 p.m. on Upper Water Street, south of the CFB Halifax Dockyard. The route travels through the Cogswell Interchange, along Barrington Street, right onto Spring Garden Road, left onto South Park Street and finally right onto University Avenue. The parade then continues past the IWK Children’s Hospital and ends at the corner of University Avenue and Robie Street.
The streets on the parade route will be closed to traffic starting at 5 p.m. Saturday and will remain closed for the duration of the parade, until about 8 p.m. Robie Street at University Avenue will also shut down at 5 p.m.
A number of streets near the Halifax North Common are also closed this weekend to pave the new roundabout at Cunard, North Park and Agricola streets. Motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes or leave earlier, as traffic will be heavier in some areas because of the closures.
There will be no parking anywhere on the parade route between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday. That includes parking meters, which will be covered with Special Event bags. Vehicles in violation will be ticketed and towed.
To help with traffic, Halifax Transit is offering free ferry service between the Alderney and Halifax ferry terminals, from 3 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. Halifax Transit buses that travel on the affected downtown Halifax streets will be detoured starting at 6 p.m. Residents can visit the Service Disruptions page for more information on the affected routes.
The Halifax Regional Municipality, the Downtown Halifax Business Commission and all the event sponsors appreciate your patience and cooperation to help make the 19th annual Holiday Parade of Lights a safe and enjoyable night for everyone involved.
