Halifax Regional Police and Halifax District RCMP appreciate the Ministerial Directive issued today in relation to the publication ban involving the use of Rehtaeh Parsons’ name as it provides clarification in a very unique case.
Current investigations and future complaints involving possible breaches of the publication ban will be reviewed in the context of the Ministerial Directive and closed unless investigators, in consultation with the Public Prosecution Service, ascertain the victim’s name has been used in a derogatory way.
Police remind citizens that, according to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the accused names cannot be disclosed as they were youths at the time of the offence.
