In their continued effort to address road safety and educate citizens on the rules of the road, the HRP/RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit is focussing on monitoring speed in school zones and crosswalk safety during the month of September.

During ‘Operation School Zone,’ officers are handing out information cards about the new changes to speed limits in school zones. They will also monitor crosswalks in areas surrounding schools, universities and colleges. Citizens are reminded to be aware of school zones and corresponding crosswalks, and exercise care in these areas to help ensure the safety of our students.

Citizens who enjoy cycling, rollerblading and skateboarding, particularly students from out of town who may not be aware of Nova Scotia laws, are reminded that helmets must be worn when participating in any wheeled activity.

The traffic safety theme in August focused on safe sharing of our roadways by motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. During the month, a total of 1,288 Summary Offence Tickets were issued for a variety of offences.
