The Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) is investigating a matter involving the discharge of a firearm by a Halifax Regional Police Officer (HRP) in Halifax.
Preliminary information suggests the following:
- On the evening of August 27, 2025 two HRP officers were responding to a call on Main Avenue in Halifax.
- The officers were outside of their police vehicle, when a vehicle drove in their direction.
- Officers attempted to flag the driver down. The driver accelerated towards the officers.
- One of the officers fired their service weapon at the vehicle. The vehicle left the scene at a high rate of speed. It was located by HRP in the early morning hours of August 28, 2025 and two people were arrested.
SiRT has assumed responsibility for this investigation in the public interest.
SiRT is responsible for investigating all matters that involve death, serious injury, sexual assault and intimate partner violence or other matters of a public interest to be investigated that may have arisen from the actions of any police officer, on or off duty, in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Investigations are under the direction and control of an independent civilian director, who has the sole authority to determine if charges should be laid at the conclusion of an investigation.
