Tuesday, May 17, 2016 (Halifax, NS) - The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents and cyclists that beginning tomorrow, May 18, on-street parking will be allowed along John Savage Avenue, between Commodore Drive and Garland Avenue, to accommodate users of the all-weather Harbour East Sport Fields facility.

Parking at the Harbour East Sport Fields facility was reduced this season to facilitate the adjacent construction of the new Dartmouth Multi-Pad facility. With the former parking lot capacity reduced, demand for on-street parking around the all-weather sport fields has increased significantly over the past month.

The municipality has determined that on-street parking should be accommodated nearby for safe facility access by participants and spectators. In order to allow on-street parking, painted bicycle lanes along this section of John Savage Avenue will be temporarily removed pending the opening of the new Dartmouth Multi-Pad and parking lot later this year. Parking in bicycle lanes is not permitted as per Section 143(2) of the provincial Motor Vehicle Act.

The bicycle lanes will be reinstated on-street once the new facility parking lot opens, which will accommodate 584 vehicles.

Crews will be working this evening to remove the painted bicycle lanes along this section of John Savage Avenue, between Commodore Drive and Garland Avenue. Motorists are advised that lane drops may be required during the course of this work and to take alternative routes, if possible.
