A man is facing charges after an incident overnight in Halifax.

At 8:07 p.m., officers responded to the 1300 block of Queen Street after a witness observed a man breaking into a car. Officers located a man fitting the description provided by the witness on Morris Street and arrested him without incident. Officers located the vehicle that had been broken into on Queen Street, as well as a vehicle that was damaged by an attempted forced entry on Church Street.

Twenty-eight-year-old Matthew Douglas Smith of Halifax was held in custody overnight. He will appear in Halifax Provincial Court today to face one count each of theft, possession of stolen property, property damage and three breaches of probation orders.

Police remind citizens that thefts from vehicles are typically crimes of opportunity, with the sight of items being a temptation for would-be thieves. Citizens should remove all items from their vehicles, lock the doors and close the windows upon exiting. If it is absolutely necessary to leave items in your vehicle, locked them in the trunk out of plain view before arriving at your destination. Anyone observing suspicious activity in or around parked vehicles should report it to police immediately at 902-490-5020.
