Man Charged with Attempted Murder

Investigators with the HRP/RCMP Integrated General Investigation Section will be charging a man in connection with an incident that occurred yesterday in Dartmouth.

On June 14, police responded to a break and enter-not-in progress in the 6900 block of Flinn Street in Halifax where numerous items were taken from the residence. Through the course of the investigation, officers identified a Dartmouth man as a suspect in this incident.

Yesterday, at approximately 7 p.m., plain clothes officers attended the suspect’s apartment on Gaston Road to arrest him in relation to the break and enter. They were invited inside the apartment by the suspect after informing him that he would be arrested for the break and enter. As officers attempted to handcuff the suspect, he became combative and resisted arrest. The suspect produced a knife and attempted to stab one of the arresting officers before fleeing the apartment with the knife towards a wooded area. The suspect was subsequently located in a field behind Prince Arthur Junior High School and during the course of trying to arrest him, a patrol officer, who perceived an immediate threat to his safety, shot the suspect.

EHS was called to the scene and transported the suspect to hospital for treatment of what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. The officers were not harmed during this incident. A search warrant was later executed at the suspect’s residence which yielded numerous stolen items and ammunition.

As a result, a 35-year-old Dartmouth man will be charged with the following offences:

  • CC 239(1) – Attempted Murder
  • CC 270.01(1) (a) – Assaulting a police officer with a weapon (3 counts)
  • CC 270(1) (b) – Resisting arrest (3 counts)
  • CC 264.1(1) (a) – Uttering threats (2 counts)
  • CC 145(1) (a) – Escaping lawful custody
  • CC 88(1) – Possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose
  • CC 90(1) – Carrying a concealed weapon
  • CC 348(1) (b) – Break and enter
  • CC 355(b) – Possession of stolen goods

The shooting investigation has been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for investigation. Therefore, all inquiries relating to the shooting should be directed to SiRT.
