Friday, May 23, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Media and the public are invited to join the United States Ambassador to Canada and U.S. Navy Exchange Officers at a ceremony Monday, May 26, honouring American servicemen.
Historians have concluded that nearly 200 American prisoners of the War of 1812 died while confined on Melville Island, on the Northwest Arm in Halifax, and are buried on Deadman’s Island.
The ceremony will run from 11 a.m. to noon at Deadman’s Island on Pinehaven Drive, off of Purcell's Cove Road. The event will include a helicopter flyover, as well as the firing of a cannon.
Attendees are advised that parking is very limited and access to the site is via a fairly steep path.
Memorial Day is observed in the United States on the last Monday in May and is a day on which the dead of all wars are remembered in special programs held in cemeteries, churches and other public meeting places.
