Winter Rainfall Warning/Hydroplaning/Flooding

Rain, heavy at times is expected today. The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall and roadway flooding may occur. Motorists are advised to adjust their driving habits and be mindful of the change of road conditions.

With the rain we’re experiencing, motorists are also asked to slow down. Speed, in conjunction with water and snow on the road, can result in a vehicle hydroplaning. This occurs when a layer of water forms between the tires and the roadway, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. If you find yourself hydroplaning, take your foot off the gas pedal, disengage the cruise control if you’re using it and let your vehicle slow down until the tires make contact with the road surface.

Visibility could also be an issue. Motorists are asked to watch carefully for pedestrians and other vehicles. Pedestrians are reminded to use crosswalks, look both ways before crossing the street, make eye contact with drivers and wait until vehicles come to a stop before entering into the roadway.  Halifax Regional Police thanks motorists and pedestrians for doing their part to help keep our roads safe.
