The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following updates and impacts to municipal services as a result of the current weather event.

Snow Clearing

Crews are currently addressing snow that has accumulated on all street and sidewalk surfaces. The weather system is expected to continue into the afternoon before moving out of the area later this evening. Strong winds with blowing snow are expected and white out conditions may be present in some areas. Winter operations crews are noticing several vehicles parked on residential streets where snow removal efforts are underway. Residents are asked to think before they park. If motorists believe their cars could impede efforts to clear the streets, then alternative parking arrangements should be made.

Vehicles can be ticketed and towed under section 139 of the provincial Motor Vehicle Act, at any time, if obstructing snow removal.

The winter parking ban will be enforced overnight from 1 a.m. to 6 a.m., Thursday, Jan. 9, to allow crews to properly clear the streets and sidewalks.

Halifax Transit

Several Halifax Transit routes are currently on a snow plan. Please follow @hfxtransit on Twitter for all service updates.

Recreation Programming

Many recreation facilities, including the Emera Oval, are delaying opening today until at least 4 p.m. Recreation staff will reassess the situation at 2 p.m. Please call ahead to your individual facility before heading out.

Solid Waste Collection

Curbside collection of garbage, organics, and recyclables in areas normally scheduled for pickup today is cancelled. There will be allowance for double the garbage limits during the next collection cycle on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
