Friday, March 27, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Work on the second phase of the North Park Street Intersection Redesign project is set to begin in early April, starting with the construction of another roundabout near the Halifax North Common.

The first phase of the project focused on construction of the Cunard Street roundabout, which opened in November 2014. This year’s construction involves the second roundabout at the intersection of North Park, Cogswell, Rainnie, Trollope and Ahern streets.

Other work will include upgrading greenway trails in the area, developing new entrances to the Common, moving overhead utilities underground and the installation of concrete curbs, new sidewalks, asphalt and new lighting.

Like the Cunard Street intersection, the intersection at Cogswell needs to be upgraded as it no longer meets national transportation standards. With five streets feeding into it, the Cogswell intersection suffers from problematic traffic flow, frequent collisions and poor connectivity from street to street.

Construction of the roundabout will require three phases of street closures over the coming months, beginning with the closure of North Park Street from Cornwallis Street to Cogswell Street, as well as Cogswell from Bauer Street to North Park.

Specific information on the first phase of street closures and other traffic impacts will be shared in the coming days through Public Service Announcements, via @hfxgov on Twitter and on the municipal government website, www.halifax.ca. Notices have also been sent to residents in the area to advise them of impacts to their property during construction.

The redesign project also includes the realignment of Rainnie Drive to Cogswell near Bauer. This will result in Rainnie being converted to a one-way street towards downtown, from Cogswell to Gottingen Street. This permanent change will go into effect later this year.
