At 4:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 20, patrol officers were conducting surveillance on a home in the 300 block of Portland Street in relation to an ongoing investigation when an officer on the street in front of the residence was charged by two dogs. The dogs ran from the property in question, onto the street and at the officer in an aggressive manner. The officer discharged three shots from his issued firearm, striking one of the dogs. Both dogs retreated back onto the property and then into the residence. Halifax Regional Police received a 911 call moments later from the residence regarding one of the dogs being shot. One of the officers at the scene then transported the dog, a bull terrier breed, and its owner to the emergency veterinary clinic. The original investigation that officers were conducting is ongoing and police remain at the scene.
