Development Proposals Open House

Updated December 16, 2016

Open House Overview & Purpose

The Planning and Development team hosted an Open House on Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2016, at the Atlantica Hotel on Robie Street, Halifax. It was a chance for residents to learn about 18 development proposals in the Regional Centre. Each proposal includes a request for new planning policy and each was received by the municipality after the Centre Plan was initiated. Application reviews and Centre Plan processes are separate, but closely related. The Open House provided citizens a chance to learn about these applications early on in the process.

Approximately 600 people came to the Open House, which had afternoon and evening sessions. There were no formal presentations, but each development proposal had a station with display boards and a copy of the application package. Residents were able to speak with the applicants and with planning staff. It was a chance to learn about each proposal, and to see how proposals relate to current planning policy and to the proposed Centre Plan. Comment forms were provided for each application, and for the Centre Plan. Some residents chose to comment on all applications.

All materials displayed at the Open House have been posted to this page (see below). Individuals who could not attend the meeting or who asked for more time with the materials can still provide comments.

Comments received by Dec. 27, 2016 will be provided to the Centre Plan team and to the Community Design Advisory Committee (CDAC). These groups will consider the comments as they work on the next stages of the Centre Plan.

Comments received by Dec. 27, 2016 will also form part of a report to Regional Council in early 2017. This Regional Council report will propose a public engagement process for each application, and will advise on the timing and content of the Centre Plan as compared to these applications.

Comments will continue to be received by Planning Applications on the individual proposals after December 27, 2016 and will continue to form part of staff research and evaluation of the applications.
