Charge up for Fire Prevention Week 2025

October 5 through 11, 2025 is Fire Prevention Week. This year’s theme is about lithium-ion battery safety in your home, whether you’re:

  • Buying new lithium-ion products—always stick with trusted brands and avoid cheap, off-brand products that may not meet safety standards. Devices without visible safety standard certification marks such as cUL, cELT or CSA may pose a higher risk of overheating, fire, or failure.
  • Charging your device—by using the cords that came with your product and charging on a flat, hard surface. Once your device is full, unplug from the charger. Never leave a device charging unattended.
  • Recycling your batteries responsibly—Never dispose of lithium-ion batteries in your regular waste or recycling collection. To safely dispose of lithium-ion batteries, visit halifax.ca/recycle and click on “household special waste”.
