What to do if your vehicle is broken into, vandalized or stolen

  • Call police at 902.490.5016 as soon as you’re aware of the incident. You'll need the following information:
    • vehicle identification number (VIN)
    • the make, model and colour of the vehicle
    • license plate number
  • Notify your insurance company as soon as possible

Basic tips to keep your vehicle secure

  • always lock your vehicle, roll up windows and ensure the trunk is properly closed and locked, even if your vehicle is parked in your yard
  • keep your keys with you. Don't leave them in your vehicle
  • don’t leave a running vehicle unattended no matter how brief the time may be
  • don’t leave valuable items in your vehicle in plain sight. If you must leave them in your vehicle, lock them in the trunk and move your vehicle to another location
  • park in well-lit, well-travelled areas
  • never leave personal identification documents, vehicle ownership papers, or credit cards in your vehicle
  • if you must leave your key with a valet, attendant, or mechanic leave only the ignition key. Make sure you are dealing with a reputable business
  • copy your license plate and vehicle information (VIN) numbers on a card and keep them with you. If your vehicle is stolen, the police will need this information to take a report
