Overview:
The Community Monitoring Committee is the eyes and ears of the communities of Beechville, Lakeside, Timberlea, Hubley, and Prospect with respect to the operation of the Otter Lake Landfill. The Community Monitoring Committee was established in 1999 – the opening year of the Otter Lake Landfill. The mandate of the Committee is to provide the ongoing environmental monitoring of the landfill operations.
Objectives/Functions:
- Monitor all operations at the Otter Lake landfill;
- Report important information about the landfill operation to the local community;
- Hear concerns from the local community and report those views to the Council of HRM;
- Report its own views to Council on any other aspect of HRM’s waste management facilities that could have an impact on the landfill facilities; and
- Report concerns to any other relevant body (ex. Nova Scotia Department of Environment) regarding any concerns it may have concerning issues inside of its mandate
Membership:
- Six (6) persons elected by the society who are residents of Halifax Regional Municipality, not more than four (4) or less than three (3) of whom shall be area residents;
- Three (3) persons appointed by the Council of HRM; and
- The HRM District 12 Councillor
Board competencies Include:
- Academic, technical expertise or work experience in the fields of environmental sciences and civil/environmental engineering
- Backgrounds in business, governance, law, regulatory affairs, facility management
- Interest in waste management at the Otter Lake Landfill, the management of the facility, and its importance in the community
- Knowledge of the Halifax Solid Waste Strategy
- Time, energy, and ability to serve on the committee
Position(s) Available:
- One (1) resident of HRM

- Two (2) years
