In its continued effort to address road safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, the HRP/RCMP Integrated Traffic Unit is concentrating on traffic safety in construction zones for the month of August.

Members of the unit will be monitoring construction zones throughout HRM to protect both motorists and road crews. Motorists are reminded that speeding fines double in temporary construction zones.

The unit’s focus during July was speeding and alcohol. Checkpoints were conducted to target impaired drivers. It is estimated that in excess of 2,000 vehicles were checked during the campaign. During the month, a total of 1,785 Summary Offence Tickets were issued for a variety of Motor Vehicle Act offences. Of these tickets, 237 were issued for failing to obey traffic signs and signals, 55 for using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle, 13 for seatbelts violations and seven for crosswalk violations.
