In its continued effort to address road safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, the Integrated Traffic Unit is concentrating on traffic safety in construction zones for the month of August.

Members of the unit will be monitoring construction zones to protect both road crews and motorists. Remember to slow down and obey construction zone signs and traffic-control people. Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled in construction zones. Fines range from $348.95 to $693.95.

Last month, the unit’s focus was speeding and impaired driving. It is estimated that over 2,000 vehicles were checked at various checkpoints to target impaired driving. During the month, a total of 1,933 Summary Offence Tickets were issued for a variety of Motor Vehicle Act offences. Of these tickets, 219 were issued for speeding violations, 48 for using a cell phone while operating a motor vehicle and 10 for crosswalk violations.
