The Halifax Regional Municipality is marking the official grand opening of the Bissett Trail.
The new trail is an essential link in the municipality’s Active Transportation Network and Integrated Mobility Plan. It creates a connection between Colby Drive and Cole Harbour Road to Bissett Road, where Cole Harbour Heritage Park is located. It also connects to the Cole Harbour Salt Marsh Trail and the Shearwater Flyer Trail.
Dating back to 2008, the Bissett Trail vision was to create a multi-use, non-motorized active transportation trail that would connect the community to the outstanding view planes of the Cole Harbour and Lawrencetown Coastal Heritage Park system, and also to become a part of a regional and national trail system.
“This trail offers another way for residents and visitors to incorporate walking, running and cycling into a healthy, active lifestyle,” said Mayor Mike Savage. “This is an investment in building connected communities where everyone has an opportunity to spend time enjoying nature.”
The grand opening event held today featured a ribbon cutting, pipe and drum performance, and remarks from special guests. It was hosted in collaboration with the Cole Harbour Parks & Trails Association, which has supported this project in many ways from the very beginning and will play a major role in helping to plan the final phases of the work in the future.

La municipalité régionale d'Halifax souligne l'ouverture officielle du sentier Bissett.
Le nouveau sentier est un maillon essentiel du réseau de transport actif et du plan de mobilité intégrée de la municipalité. Il crée un lien entre la promenade Colby et le chemin Cole Harbour jusqu'au chemin Bissett, où se trouve le parc patrimonial Cole Harbour. Il est également relié au sentier du Cole Harbour Salt Marsh et au sentier Shearwater Flyer.
La vision du sentier Bissett, qui remonte à 2008, était de créer un sentier de transport actif non motorisé à usages multiples qui relierait la collectivité aux points de vue exceptionnels du réseau du Cole Harbour and Lawrencetown Coastal Heritage Park et qui ferait partie d'un réseau de sentiers régionaux et nationaux.
« Ce sentier offre aux résidents et aux visiteurs une autre façon d'intégrer la marche, la course et le vélo à un mode de vie sain et actif », a déclaré le maire Mike Savage. « C'est un investissement dans la construction de communautés connectées où chacun a l'opportunité de passer du temps à profiter de la nature. »
La cérémonie d'ouverture d'aujourd'hui a été marquée par la coupe du ruban, le jeu de tuyaux et de tambours et les remarques d'invités spéciaux. Il a été organisé en collaboration avec l'Association des parcs et sentiers de Cole Harbour, qui a appuyé ce projet de nombreuses façons depuis le tout début et qui jouera un rôle majeur dans la planification des phases finales des travaux dans l'avenir.
