Monday, Sept. 14, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Residents are invited to take part in the Creighton Street painting project and street festival happening from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, in Halifax.

This painting project is an opportunity to bring the Creighton Street neighbourhood together to create a project that reflects the character of the street, and to celebrate the community and its people.

The project also aims to help slow traffic and make the area a safer place for families to walk to school and for kids to play. It is meant to cultivate a sense of pride, fun and celebration in the neighbourhood.

The design to be painted on the roadway was created by Marven Nelligan, a local artist who grew up on and around Creighton Street. Marven is also the community artist selected to work on another art installation at the Armoury Gateway, a new pedestrian plaza at the Halifax Common representing the local African Nova Scotian community.

For the Creighton Street project, Marven created the image with input from a wide range of community members. The design is built on the idea of a young black woman’s hair braided and growing out as it transforms into a large tree. In the branches appear various characters and images that are symbolic of the many different attributes of the community.

The municipality and those involved in the project would like to thank the Halifax Community Investment Fund and Benjamin Moore Paints for their generous contributions to the project, as well Joseph Howe School and the local businesses and organizations helping to provide food and entertainment for the street festival.

Those interested in participating in the painting project should meet at noon at the corner of Creighton Street and Charles Street. There will be local groups and performers on hand to provide entertainment and help paint the intersection.

We hope you can join us for this fun family event. To learn more about the project, please visit https://www.facebook.com/creighton.painting.
