With the dog days of summer upon us, HRM Partners in Policing remind citizens not to leave their pets unattended in parked cars.

Last Friday, police responded to eight calls regarding animals being left in vehicles in the hot sun. Fortunately, no animals were found to be in distress. With sunny weather and warm temperatures expected this week, it serves as a reminder for all pet owners about the dangers of leaving animals in parked cars in the summer.

On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked vehicle quickly becomes like a furnace and presents potentially fatal conditions for pets left inside. Animal owners are encouraged not to leave their pets in the vehicles on warm days even for a few minutes. If you can’t take them with you when you park your vehicle, leave your pets at home.
