At 1:08 a.m., police were on patrol in the area of 965 Bedford Highway near Moirs Pond when they observed a man acting in a suspicious manner. The officers approached the man, and upon seeing them, the man jumped into the pond and swam away from the officers. The man failed to heed the requests of the officers to return to shore, and eventually the man began to tire and requested assistance. The officers on-scene had located a life preserver from a nearby dock at Dewolfe Park but the man was now beyond throwing distance for the preserver. Two officers entered the water and swam out to the man who accepted the life preserver and was pulled safely to shore. The man was taken to hospital for a medical assessment.
