GO#16-91 Police charge man in January 1 drug overdose investigation

UPDATE AS OF 2 P.M. ON SATURDAY, JANUARY 2

On Friday, January 1 at 1:20 a.m. police and paramedics were dispatched to an apartment building in the 0-100 block of Horizon Court in Dartmouth. A 24-year-old man was located who was suffering from medical issues which may have resulted from a drug overdose. The man was taken to hospital by EHS and it appears his condition may be life-threatening. Police arrested a 23-year-old man from Dartmouth on January 1 in an attempt to determine any involvement he may have had in the victim's medical issues.

The 24-year-old victim, Jesse Smith of Dartmouth, has since passed away in hospital. The man who was taken into custody, 23-year-old Jesse Raymond Gaetz of Dartmouth, has been charged with criminal negligence causing death as it’s alleged that he failed to obtain medical assistance for the victim. Gaetz has been remanded to the Central Nova Scotia Correctional Facility and is scheduled to appear in Dartmouth Provincial Court on Monday, January 4 to answer to the charge.
