Throughout April, police charged 55 people - 51 men and 4 women, ranging in age from 19 to 64 - with impaired driving. Of these incidents, 31 were identified by police during their patrols and nine were identified after a collision had occurred. Concerned citizens alerted police to an additional 21. Four people were charged with drug impaired driving.HRM Partners in Policing reminding people that May 15-21 is National Road Safety Week. Combating impaired driving continues to be a priority because driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts everyone in danger.In December 2009, MADD Canada and the Province of Nova Scotia launched Campaign 911 which encourages people to call police with information on suspected impaired drivers. HRM Partners in Policing continue to be encouraged by the number of citizens helping to play a role in community safety. Anyone with information on a suspected drunk driver is asked to please call 911 to ensure an immediate response.
