RCMP/Halifax Regional Police charged 80 drivers with Impaired Operation of a Motor Vehicle in July 2013. Of these drivers, 61 were male, 19 were female, and ages ranged from 16 to 76 years of age. An additional 19 drivers were issued driving suspensions for operating a motor vehicle having consumed alcohol. Police issued one 24-hour, and 18 seven-day suspensions. Sixteen drivers were identified at motor vehicle collisions and 60 drivers were detected at traffic stops. Another 23 drivers were found impaired at checkpoints. Officers were able to detect and charge persons at a wide range of BAC's from 90-310 mg%. Twenty-six of the charged persons were more than two times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood and seven others were more than three times the legal limit of 80 milligrams of alcohol per 100 ml of blood. Thirteen of the charged persons refused to provide samples and were charged with the offence of refusal. Six drivers were under the influence of drugs. Additional highlights:
- Ninety-nine drivers were found to be Operating a Motor Vehicle while Impaired in July.
- From January 1st - July 31st 2013, Halifax District RCMP and Halifax Regional Police had a 21% increase in 911 calls from the public over the same period last year. This resulted in 132 Impaired driving charges and eighteen driving suspensions.
- Halifax Regional Police charged a 76-year-old man that was more than three times the legal limit and had a five-year-old child in the backseat of the car.
- Halifax District RCMP charged a man on a scooter after he was seen swerving all over the road.
