Yesterday at 5:20 p.m., Halifax Regional Police officers responded to a report of an impaired driver in the Portland Street area in Dartmouth.A concerned citizen had contacted police after observing the suspect (they believed to be impaired) leave a local restaurant and enter his vehicle. The citizen followed the suspect in his personal vehicle while keeping police informed of the direction of travel of the suspect. The suspect was observed getting into a minor collision on Woodland Avenue near Ryland Avenuw where he then abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot. The citizen pointed out the fleeing suspect to an off-duty police officer who was in the area and this officer then subdued and arrested the suspect without incident.

A 26-year-old man from the Dartmouth area will be appearing in court at a later date to face Impaired Driving and Failing to Remain at the Scene of an Accident charges.

The citizen involved in this matter did a great service for his community by alerting and then assisting police in the apprehension of this impaired driver. A job well done!
