Halifax Regional Police has contacted the Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team, or SiRT, regarding a motor vehicle crash that occurred last night in Herring Cove.

At 11:30 p.m., an officer on patrol attempted to check a vehicle parked near the Herring Cove Look-Off on John Brackett Drive. As the officer approached the vehicle, it sped from the area and left the road a short distance away, near the intersection of John Brackett Drive and Dempsey Lane. The car flipped on its roof causing extensive damage. Four of the five occupants had to be extracted from the vehicle by Halifax Fire and Emergency. All five occupants were transported to hospital by EHS. Three were released following treatment and two of the rear occupants of the vehicle, a 14-year-old female youth and a 21-year-old man, sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries and remain in hospital. The vehicle was determined to have been stolen from Antigonish on June 8.

The driver of the vehicle, an 18-year-old man, was held in custody overnight. He is facing charges of impaired operation of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property over $5,000, flight from police and breach of probation. The third rear passenger, an 18-year-old Halifax man, was also held in custody overnight. He is facing charges of misleading police after providing a false name and also had a warrant for his arrest. They will both appear in Halifax Provincial Court later today. The incident remains under investigation and additional charges are anticipated.

As this crash resulted in serious injuries following police involvement, Halifax Regional Police contacted SiRT and they are conducting an investigation into the crash. Any questions about their investigation should be directed to SiRT.
