Halifax Regional Police has referred an incident that occurred yesterday in Halifax to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for investigation.

Yesterday at 7:30 p.m., police received a report of a woman yelling and screaming in a commercial parking lot off Lamont Terrace in Dartmouth. Patrol Officers located the 51-year-old woman nearby and, out of concerns for her safety, arrested her under the Involuntary Psychiatric Treatment Act. She was transported by officers to the QEII hospital for medical attention without incident. While waiting to be seen, the officer attempted to apply handcuffs to the woman for safety reasons. As the officer attempted to control and place handcuffs on her, the woman sustained a broken arm. She was treated in hospital and will appear in Halifax Provincial Court at a later date to face a charge of assaulting a police officer. The officer wasn’t injured.

As this incident resulted in injuries following police involvement, Halifax Regional Police contacted SiRT and they are conducting an investigation related to the injuries sustained by the woman. Any questions about their investigation should be directed to SiRT.
