Incident referred to SiRT for investigation

Halifax Regional Police has referred an incident that occurred today in Halifax to the Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) for investigation.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. officers were dispatched to a report of a theft from a woman’s purse inside a business on Granville Street, after which the male suspect had fled on foot. Responding officers located the suspect in the area of George Street and were about to place him under arrest, however, an altercation occurred and the man fled from police. After a short foot pursuit to the area of George and Barrington Streets, an officer deployed a Conducted Energy Device on the man, after which he fell to the ground and struck his head. The man then lost consciousness; officers immediately attended to him and called for EHS. The 23-year-old man was then transported to hospital for treatment of his injuries.

As this incident resulted in injuries following police involvement, Halifax Regional Police contacted SiRT and they are conducting an investigation into this matter. Any questions about their investigation should be directed to SiRT.
