A man has been charged after fleeing police last night in Dartmouth.
At 7:19 p.m., members of the Halifax Regional Police West Quick Response Unit the attempted to stop a car after it ran a red light at the intersection of Windmill Road and Wright Avenue. The officers attempted to stop the car but it fled at a high rate of speed up Wright Avenue. Police were able to obtain the license plate number and discontinued following the car.
Shortly thereafter, police were notified that the suspect vehicle was involved in a minor collision at the ramp onto the 118 Highway from Wright Avenue. The suspect vehicle had side-swiped a car and did not stop to exchange information with the other driver or see if medical assistance was required. An off duty Nova Scotia Sherriff witnessed the accident and began to follow the suspect vehicle while on the line with 911 providing details to the call taker. Enfield RCMP located the suspect vehicle on Highway 102 and attempted to stop the car, but again the driver refused to stop. Bible Hill RCMP deployed a spike belt near exit 13 and successfully stopped the car.
The driver of the vehicle, 23-year-old Omar Abdullah O. Mashraee of Halifax, was arrested at 7:57p.m. at the scene without incident. He was held in custody and appeared in Dartmouth Provincial Court this morning to face charges of two counts of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of flight from police and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
