Halifax Regional Police have arrested a man for escaping lawful custody. In the man’s attempt to escape, he injured one of our officers.

At approximately 10:50 a.m. police responded to a report of an officer requiring assistance at the Provincial Courthouse located at 5250 Spring Garden Road in Halifax. A man who had just been sentenced to a jail term assaulted an HRP officer as he was fleeing the courthouse. The officer was attending a scheduled court appearance on an unrelated matter. The man was quickly taken into custody following a brief struggle with responding officers and sheriffs.

The officer, who has served with Halifax Regional Police for three years, has been transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. We ask the media and the public to respect the privacy of the officer and their family during this sensitive time.

An update will be issued when further details are available. Charges are anticipated.
