Wednesday, March 18, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – Due to the serious mobility and access issues on municipal streets right now, the Halifax Regional Municipality is banning on-street parking across the Halifax region until further notice.
Under Section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, vehicles can be ticketed or towed any time they are parked in a manner that interferes with snow clearing.
Under more typical circumstances, crews can often work around parked vehicles; however, with more than 50 centimetres of snow down today and more than 80 centimetres since the weekend, this has significantly escalated the problems caused by parked vehicles hampering clearing efforts and access for emergency vehicles.
Halifax Regional Police will be out in full force ticketing and towing any vehicles on the streets until further notice. Staff will reassess the road conditions at 4 p.m. on Thursday to determine whether the ban will continue.
The municipality and police want to thank residents who moved their vehicles last evening in compliance with the overnight parking ban and kept their vehicles off the street today as the snow continued.
The municipality understands that there are still instances where people will need to be on the roads tonight and in the coming days. We would ask those people who need to be out to make arrangements for off-street parking, including parking garages, car-pooling with others who have off-street and using alternative methods of transportation, such as transit, once the service resumes.
