Tuesday, June 14, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – The next generation of tree lovers will take root tomorrow (Wednesday) at Springvale Elementary, as Grade 3 and 4 students plant trees in recognition of Arbour Day.
Two classes at the school were given the tough task of whittling down a list of 23 different tree varieties to just three for tomorrow’s celebration. Each class had to give our urban forester reasons why they selected each variety. The winners are a Sugar Maple, Native Red Maple, and a Japanese Tree Lilac.
The media is invited to the annual tree-planting celebration, which will include poems, the ceremonial tree planting, and an interactive display of our Urban Forestry equipment (including a 45-foot aerial lift).

The municipality annually works with different elementary schools across the region to determine how best to introduce the value of trees into the class curriculum.
Each celebration is adjusted slightly in order to maximize the educational value for that school’s students.
Arbour Day is a day in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees in their neighbourhood. Many countries observe the day in the spring, but the date varies depending on climate and suitable planting season.
