Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Fall is a great time of year to clean out your closets, free up much needed storage space, and properly dispose of household special waste not accepted for curbside pick-up.

Curbside Give Away Weekend, Oct. 15 & 16

Give your clutter a second chance by placing unwanted, gently used items curbside with a sticker or sign clearly marked FREE for pick-up by other residents.

The goal of this event held each year during both Waste Reduction Week and Environment Week, is to reduce the amount of garbage that ends up in our municipal landfill by diverting unwanted items to be reused instead. Reusing and recycling household items instead of discarding them reduces pressure on our municipal facilities, and is a great way to get rid of your under-used items, and find some great free items of your own.

Follow these simple steps to participate in the Curbside Give Away:

• Place re-usable household items at the curb in front of your home during the weekend

• Only place items that are free that are clearly marked with a “FREE” sign

• Post your items on the Interactive Map or Facebook event

• Unclaimed items must be removed from the curb by dusk on Sunday

o Items left at the curb can result in a By-Law violation

• Consider donating unclaimed items charitable organizations

Place any garbage for collection on your regular garbage day and week. Regular limits and preparation is required.

Please note this event happens rain or shine; use your discretion when deciding whether or not to put items out to the curb.

Promote your free items and plan your treasure hunt in advance by pinning and viewing available items on the Curbside Give Away map posted at www.halifax.ca/curbside. Residents are encouraged to pin the location and details of items available to assist others in searching and finding specific items by neighbourhood. Share your finds and connect with other treasure hunters on Facebook and Twitter and use the hashtag #hfxcurbside.
