Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014 (Halifax, NS) – Deputy Mayor Darren Fisher will join the 78th Highlanders on Friday, Aug. 22, as they exercise the Freedom of the City of Halifax by parading through the town with drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed.
This time honoured tradition dates as far back as the Roman Empire, and was originally granted to military units that had gained the trust of a municipality.
The event begins at 11 a.m. with an inspection inside the walls of the Halifax Citadel National Historic Site. From there the group will march east on Sackville Street, south on Brunswick Street, east on Spring Garden Road and south on Barrington Street to Government House for further inspection. They will then continue north on Barrington Street to Grand Parade for a proclamation ceremony.
Media are invited to take photos at any of the stops along the way. The following is the exact schedule of events:
11:10 a.m. - Halifax Citadel, pre-parade presentation and inspection.
12:00 p.m. - Parade to Government House, depart following the noon gun.
12:15 p.m. - Inspection at Government House.
