Police charge man with driving at almost double the posted speed limit
Halifax Regional Police have charged two drivers with driving in excess of 50 km/h over the posted speed limit in the last two days, one of whom was travelling at almost double the posted speed limit.
Yesterday at approximately 1:30 p.m. a member of the Traffic Unit observed a car travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 111 travelling southbound. The officer captured the vehicle’s speed at 158 km/h in an 80 km/h zone.
Today at approximately 6:30 a.m. a member of the Traffic Unit observed a car travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 102 travelling southbound. The officer captured the vehicle’s speed at 152 km/h in a 100 km/h zone.
A 30-year-old Halifax man (first incident) and a 39-year-old Lower Sackville man (second incident) were both ticketed for stunting under the Motor Vehicle Act, a charge that is automatically laid when a vehicle is travelling more than 50 km/h over the speed limit. In addition, both men were suspended from driving for one week and their vehicles were seized and towed.
The fine in Nova Scotia for stunting is $2,422.50 and six points are assigned to the driver’s record.
Over the past two days the Traffic Unit has laid 32 other summary offence tickets for issues causing safety concerns on our roadways such as:
- Speeding
- Unsafe vehicle equipment such as bald tires
- Fraudulent inspection stickers
- Failing to obey traffic sign such as stop signs
- Unsafe lane changing
- Distracted driving (cell phones)
In a continued effort to address traffic safety issues and educate citizens on the rules of the road, our officers focus on offences causing concerns for road safety. We all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. If you see someone driving dangerously, report it to police by calling 911.
