Police charge man for firearms offences

Police have charged a man with firearm offences in relation to an incident last night in Halifax.

At approximately 9:45 p.m. police responded to a report of a man checking vehicles in the area of Edwards Street and Jubilee Road. Central Division patrol officers located the man nearby, and as they approached him, they observed what appeared to be a weapon sticking out of his clothing. As the officers approached the man he reached for the weapon. After a brief struggle the officers arrested the man and seized a handgun.

Michael Anthony Laphen, 43, of Halifax, is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Court today to face charges of:

  • Possession of a weapon contrary to an order (x 2)
  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Possession of a restricted weapon
  • Possession of a weapon knowing possession is unauthorized
  • Carrying a concealed weapon
  • Possession of a loaded firearm
  • Possession of an unauthorized firearm
  • Possession of a firearm with altered serial number
  • Assault police officer with a weapon (x 3)
  • Uttering threats to cause bodily harm (x 2)
