Police have been on scene at a barricaded person call in Halifax since earlier this morning.

At 5:20 a.m., an officer witnessed a man in a residence located at 6024 Compton Avenue with a firearm. Patrol officers, investigators, the Emergency Response Team and a Crisis Negotiator responded to this incident.

Shortly after 11 a.m., a man and a woman were taken into custody by police from the residence in question; however investigators have yet to determine their connection to the original incident involving a firearm. The investigation is ongoing and more information will be provided when it becomes available.

The police appreciate the cooperation from the public who had to alter their morning commute to avoid the affected area. A number of streets remain closed at this time to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic ensure public safety:

•  Compton Avenue •  Robie Street southbound between Cunard and Williams Streets, •  Robie Street northbound between Quinpool Road and Cunard Street.

Police are also asking pedestrians walking in the area of the Halifax Common to avoid the west side (Robie Street) and north side (Cunard Street) and stay to the centre of the Common as a precaution.
