As we enter the first full weekend of the university school year, Halifax Regional Police would like to remind students about precautions to take when traveling by taxi.
Taxi drivers provide a valuable service to members of our community, including university students. It is important to note that the majority of taxi drivers take pride in providing a safe and accessible method of transportation to citizens; however, as with any service industry, potential for abuse of customers exists.
When taking a cab, you should observe the following safety tips:
- Make note of the company name and number on the taxi roof light.
- Look for a taxi meter and check for the taxi driver’s license and taxi owner’s license, which should be clearly displayed inside the vehicle.
- Sit in the back of the vehicle if possible. This provides additional safety for passengers and drivers.
- Report in-progress incidents impacting public safety to police by calling 490-5020. Complaints regarding the operation of cabs should be directed to the HRM Customer Contact Center at 3-1-1. In case of emergency, always call 9-1-1.
