Halifax Regional Police is warning citizens about a scam involving phone calls from an individual claiming to represent a well-known credit card company.
In the past week, police have received reports of a man with an East Indian accent calling early in the morning, claiming to be from a credit card company. The man then states that the citizen’s credit card has been compromised and is being used fraudulently. He then asks for the citizens’ credit card number so he can confirm the information. The man is very persistent in attempting to obtain the credit card information.
These calls are not legitimate. If you receive such a call, hang-up, contact your credit card company and/or your bank, as well as the police.
Investigators remind citizens to be suspicious of any calls asking for money or credit card information. Refrain from providing personal information, whether the solicitation occurs by telephone, email or in person, unless you have initiated the contact or you are certain of the identification of the person and the legitimacy of the organization they claim to represent. Providing personal information such as your Social Insurance Number (SIN) and date of birth could lead to identity theft.
